When the Tigers Broke Free II Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

James Bridger: MISCELLANEOUS RANT:

I boast that I own nearly a thousand geocache hides. Come to find out, it's been the other way around this whole time.

Someone painted April Fool in big black letters on a Dead End sign.

Would you rather get one shot in the head or five in the chest and bleed to death?

Held his heart in his hands, and ate of it.

You pay as you go. Sometimes all you have.

I'm going outside now. I may be gone for some time.

I am shutting down the machine. A container will remain at the following location for a while yet, until I retrieve it, so you may find it normally. If you wish, you may take the container. If you do so, please indicate such in your log. Likewise, as I recover the container, I will post that I have removed the container.

Thank you to all who "Veni. Vidi. Vici."

Geocache Description:

This is a quick cache located along the Main Street of Valentine, Nebraska. The area is adjacent to the Valentine Police Department, and I have the permission of the Valentine Chief of Police to place the cache here. The terrain is level with concrete. You will be looking for a small magnetic container.

It was just before dawn
One miserable morning in black 'forty four.
When the forward commander
Was told to sit tight
When he asked that his men be withdrawn.
And the Generals gave thanks
As the other ranks held back
The enemy tanks for a while.
And the Anzio bridgehead
Was held for the price
Of a few hundred ordinary lives.

And kind old King George
Sent Mother a note
When he heard that father was gone.
It was, I recall,
In the form of a scroll,
With gold leaf and all.
And I found it one day
In a drawer of old photographs, hidden away.
And my eyes still grow damp to remember
His Majesty signed
his own rubber stamp.

It was dark all around.
There was frost in the ground
When the tigers broke free.
And no one survived
From the Royal Fusiliers Company C.
They were all left behind,
Most of them dead,
The rest of them dying.
And that's how the High Command
Took my daddy from me.

There are three war memorials here that honor those from Cherry County who served our country. The Bronze Doughboy War Memorial (the one closest to the street) was erected in 1920. It lists those who served during World War I. A star precedes the names of those who lost their lives.

The next monument from the street, of grey stone, lists all veterans who served, and died, from Cherry County. It includes World War I up to the Vietnam War and was dedicated on November 11, 1984. The final and most recent memorial, of black stone, honors those who served in World War II. This monument was dedicated on June 28, 2003.

Take a moment to walk the area and reflect on the sacrifice paid by these men for our continuing freedom. You will not have to leave the memorial area to log this find and the cache is not located on a building or a monument. Respect the area, CITO if needed, use stealth if warranted, and rehide the cache as you find it so the next person can have the same challenge. Thank you and good luck.
