The event is potluck lunch at Starkey park, co-ordinates are for Pavilion B in the day use area! The event will start at 10am & the potluck lunch will begin at noon!
Come one, come all to the 5th Annual Jay B Starkey Wilderness Presserve Geoevent & New Years Eve Eve send off.
In the past we have had GC12090, GC1G988, GC17VY3 and of course, the one that started it all, GCXGWK! Everyone has said we needed to make and keep this an annual event! We will bring the plates, cups & plasticware! We have electricity for those that want to bring their laptops! Sorry, no WiFi!
The park is located in western Pasco county on 8,069 acres & is easily accessible from SR 54 via Starkey Blvd. (Entrance to Longleaf). The park's normal hours are dawn to dusk. The park has several hiking trails as well as a horseback trail & bike trail. Picnic shelters through out the park as well as playgrounds for the kids.
There are currently lots caches in the park ranging from easy to hard & virtual, traditional & multi. They range in size from micro to 5 gallon bucket. Rumer has it that there is even a 35 gallon size cache out there somewhere!
We will have a table set up for trading of Travel Bugs & Geocoins & another area set up for just discovery for those of you that can't quite let go! I'm one of them! Now if you find coins elsewhere at the event, please respect the owner & ask first!
Please post in your logs what you will be bringing! Also there is a very large grill in the pavilion, large enough for several people to cook on at the same time so if any one wants to bring food & cook there, you are welcome to it! If a couple cachers would bring some sparkling apple cider (pulp free, we have a punch fountain we will put this in) we can have a toaste to the New Year! We will be bringing water for drinking & ice!
Registration starts at 9am which will give people a chance to mingle and maybe find a cache or two before lunch! Lunch will start promptly at noon by the clock on the GPS. Oldrocknmetal has taken up the challenge of doing a poker run, more info to follow on that.
This year due to illness we will not be putting out any new caches but anyone is welcome to place any! Remember, the event is for us all to come together and have a great time! Ok, I've been told there are several new caches that will be published the day of the event so there will be new caches! Thank you very much to those that placed them!
New twist at the park which might make this the last event for here. Pasco County, as of 11/15/10, has started to charge $2.00 per car to enter the park. Please let us know if this is a issue for you. Also, the date. Some concerns have been raised since it's the day after Christmas! Dad thinks that most likely most geocachers might have received a new GPS for Christmas and so will be itching for a reason to use it! One Scrooge told me, Bah, Humbug! Day after Christmas will be full of staying home with family and watching the game! Who will win, my family or Scrooge! Thought maybe with the new fees (special equipment needed-Terrain) and with the games (temptation to stay home and watch-Difficulty) that this should be a 5/5 event but figured better just leave it a 1/1.
