In East Haddam, off Baker Lane. Look for sign and turn into paved driveway; coordinates provided. Parking for several vehicles. Follow the paved loop trail. Almost wheelchair accessible except for the end. Open dawn to dusk.
I enjoy exploring out-of-the-way nature preserves that deserve more attention. This is one in a new cache series highlighting East Haddam preserves. Tired of being tripped up by roots and rocks on the trail? How does a paved path right to the cache sound? Several organizations recently completed an acquisition of the Patrell Property, an East Haddam and Lyme Preserve. This 42 acre parcel contains over 3000 feet of frontage on the Eightmile River. There were plans for a subdivision in here, but fortunately that will not happen now. This preserve is in the lower third of the Eightmile River Watershed; the river itself was recently granted a "Wild and Scenic" designation by the federal government; there are only seven other segments in all of New England. Besides the paved path, there is a nice loop trail which takes you further north in the preserve, with plenty of room for another cache or two. Please enjoy this pristine area we are so lucky to have available to us.
