The Nynehead lift was just one of seven such lifts in operation on the Great western canal in Somerset .
The 13 mile Somerset link from Tiverton to Taunton was opened to through traffic in 1838 and was operational until around 1865. Then due to newer forms of transportation it was purchased by the railway and decommissioned and the land and machinery sold off.
It is the best preserved example of this type of lift in Britain. Although sadly very little of it remains. It surely was a great feat of engineering when first built and was in use. There is a very pleasant walk that carries on throughout the rest of the woods following the remains of the canal.
The footpath can be muddy in winter, Keep children under control as there are some unguarded drops
We hope you enjoy this, our first cache, and please follow the link to find out more of this marvellous place.
