How Geocaching Works

Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions in our disclaimer.

Geocache Description:

My very first find was “One Dark & Stormy Knight” at Mansfield. Before I’d reached my 15th find I was already hooked and couldn't resist finding a “DO NOT FIND THIS CACHE” in Filey.

When I first learnt about Geocaching I did not foresee becoming an addict, but by 50 finds I was definitely hooked and now I’m at 80 there's no turning back.

Whilst recently checking Geocaching.com I noticed numerous “DO NOT FIND” caches around the world, and was concerned that I answered Yes to some (well OK rather a lot) of the questions.

I considered signing up for CA (Cacheholics Anonymous) but the problem is that...

I DON'T WANT TO STOP!!!

Historical research shows that the first “DO NOT FIND” cache was offered by Team Cheesehead of Wisconsin (GC7086) and was placed in July of 2002.

Do you also have a problem like me?

Do muggles, family and even other Geocachers think that you are obsessed, addicted, or just taking the game a little too far. They may be worried about you, express their concern, and volunteer to intervene. This cache is designed to be a diagnostic test, and possibly even therapeutic for those of us, I mean you, who may be Cacheholics.

Setting this cache is my first step to help my fellow cachers beat their own addictions.

This cache may lead you to reach the same conclusion as me.

Do you have a problem with Geocaching? Only you can answer these questions for yourself.

If you've got a problem it's time to admit it and deal with it now.

Not finding this cache could be your first step. If you cannot resist but know you have a problem then this is your opportunity to publicly admit it in your log in true AA style. When logging please feel free to identify your symptoms and tactics to hide your addiction!

If you are a recovering Cacheoholic, and can resist the temptation, please log as a note and share your success story.

I have recommended this cache is done at night in the attributes to help you hide your shame if you should find yourself weak and unable to resist this cache.

Answering the following questions may help to put your relationship with Geocaching into perspective for you. If you end up answering "yes" to 5 or more questions, you may want to take a good look how your life is affected by Geocaching.

1. Has caching ever interfered with Work, College or School?
2. Do you have trouble refusing Geocaching?
3. Have you ever cancelled or changed plans in order to nab a FTF?
4. Do you use Geocaching to help you relax?
5. Have you tried to give up Geocaching and failed?
6. Have you ever damaged your vehicle whilst caching?
7. Have you ever had explain to the Police what you are up to whilst Geocaching?
8. Have you ever had a parking ticket while finding a Geocache? – (you know who you are!)
9. Do you lie to others about how often you partake in Geocaching?
10. Is your car, dog or rucksack a travel bug?
11. Do you often wish people would just mind their own business about you and Geocaching?
12. Do you actually look forward to visiting the in-laws?
13. Do you have a special caching bag that is always ready to go at a moment’s notice?
14. Do you have special caching trousers, coat or jacket used solely for caching?
15. Do you check Geocaching.com web site more than once a day?
16. Have you ever missed your regular meal and gone caching instead?
17. Do you own more than one GPS?
18. Does your car have satnav just because of caching?
19. Can you now read the hints without clicking “Decrypt” or looking at the key.
20. When you are in a shop, do you look at every hollow object as a potential cache container?
21. You are sent to the supermarket for a pint of milk, you spend the £20 you were given on plastic boxes and swaps and forget the milk!
22. Everywhere you go, are you always looking for a hiding spot?
23. Do you try and dream up new hides to torment fellow cachers?
24. Have you told your other half that you just need to pop out to get a newspaper and come back with a FTF? – (you know who you are!)
25. Are the speed dials on your mobile Phone a Friend’s?

This cache is here to help. This cache is a test to see how addicted to Geocaching you really are.

We all know that there are those among us (and you know who you are!) who, when they look at the page showing their 20 nearest caches, see nothing but a perfect page full of finds. Then that new cache comes along and spoils your pristine page. It sits there at the top of the list. Taunting you. Staring at you like a giant unblinking eye.

It calls out to you. "Fiiiind meeee..." You comply, even though it is pitch black outside. If you're very lucky, you score a First to Find, and then race back to log it and remove it from your top 20 list. Ahhhhh. All is in order again.

Locals: You'll have the hardest time resisting this cache, since it will appear on your nearest caches list for as long as it remains unfound. Every time you check to see if any new caches have been hidden nearby, it will be waiting here, calling for you...

The question is: How strong are you? Can you resist searching out this cache?

I have tried my very best to place it in a location where most cachers would have nothing to gain from finding it.

• This cache is pretty lame in order to try and help you resist the temptation.

• There is no invigorating hike & hardly any physical challenge whatsoever.

• You can drive, bike, walk or catch a bus to within a short distance of this Cache, depending on the time of day you visit; you may also have the added stress of avoiding muggles.

• There are no breathtaking views.

• There is no FTF Badge or other cool pieces of cache swag to trade for. In fact, the cache contains no more than a log sheet. You even have to go to the trouble of bringing your own pen.

The ONLY thing you have to reward yourself from searching out this cache is just adding another find to your total. No glory. Just a number. Just another silly micro. Show the world how strong you are. You can stop Geocaching anytime you want. Really you can.

YOUR CHALLENGE IS TO NOT TO GO LOOKING FOR THIS CACHE.

ARE YOU ONE OF THE FEW CACHERS IN THE WORLD THAT ARE ABLE TO RESIST FINDING “DO NOT FIND” CACHES?

REMEMBER THE ONLY TRUE WAY TO BAG THIS CACHE IS TO LOG A PROMISE THAT YOU WILL NOT FIND or AS A DNF!!!

IF YOU CANNOT RESIST PLEASE ADMIT YOUR ADDICTION IN YOUR LOG IN TRUE CACHEHOLICS ANONYMOUS STYLE SO THAT FELLOW CACHERS KNOW HOW ADDICTED YOU HAVE BECOME.
