Geocache Description:

A cache located in the Sierra Vista Open Space Preserve on the Boccardo trail loop. This preserve is also known as Boccardo, and sometimes is mistaken as being part of Alum Rock Park since access to the preserve is through Alum Rock Park. From the top of the ridge, a short distance from this cache, one has a magnificent view of the Santa Clara Valley, and on a clear day one can see from Gilroy to San Francisco.

When searching for this cache please don’t leave the trail. The only way it can be found is by standing on the trail. Don’t go off trail or climb/descend anything. The cache is a small lock n lock container. It can hold small swag items. For the first to find, please take the FTF microcoin.

After signing the log please hide the cache as far back on the level hide surface as possible.

Before visiting this cache, plan ahead and look for the other caches located along the way in the preserve and Alum Rock Park.

Along the way you may encounter cattle on the grassy slopes and trails. The cattle are of the Corriente breed. The open space authority says that this breed is gentle and inquisitive, and is being used to improve the grassland habitat. If you encounter them on the trail they will move on their own. Give them a few minutes to do so then continue on.

Access to the preserve is through Alum Rock Park. From the Rustic Lands parking lot in Alum Rock Park take the North Rim trail to the Todd Quick trail loop. At the top of the Todd Quick loop is the entrance to the preserve. The hike from Rustic Lands to the top of the preserve and back is 6.5 to 7 miles with an elevation gain of about 1500 feet.

Hours are from sunrise to sunset. Since entrance to the preserve is through Alum Rock Park, one must pay the entrance fee (if the kiosk is open) which is currently set at $6. And currently Alum Rock Park is closed on Mondays so there is no access to the preserve on that day.
