Stephen King’s Misery (pub. 1987) turns the phrase “I’m your number-one fan” into horror.
Paul Sheldon, is a popular novelist who owes his success to a single character: Misery Chastain, star of a series of historical romances, that has made Sheldon a household name.
Annie Wilkes, an ex-nurse, lives alone in Sidewinder, Colorado, in a farmhouse with two cows, six hens and a sow named Misery. Misery, the sow, was named after her favorite character Misery Chastain.
Now, what are the chances that these two would meet? In Stephen King’s world, very high. When the novelist leaves a small town resort in the Colorado Rockies, he finds himself caught in a sudden blizzard. He loses control of his car and crashes, but his life is saved by a mysterious stranger, who happens to be his “number-one fan.” Oh Snap!!
The movie version was released in 1990 and has the distinction of being the first adaptation of a Stephen King novel to win an Academy Award. The Oscar went to actress Kathy Bates who played the Jekyll/Hyde character of Annie Wilkes. James Caan, turned out an equally great performance in the role of Paul Sheldon.
