Geocache Description:

This cache is a tribute to the 123rd anniversary of Oatley Park. The cache is a clear tupperware container. please feel free to write your Oatley Park experiences in the log book. IMP. Oatley Park has had a long and controversial history that has made it a important place in the heart of Oatley's citizens.
Here is some of the most memorable moments of the park.
• Oatley Park was opened on 25 March 1887 as a public recreational area.
• It was originally named ‘Peakhurst Park’ before the name was changed to Oatley Park.
• It has a area of 45 hectares and 114 known bird species.
• It is also home to the phantom ‘swamp wallaby’ and short- beaked echidnas one of which I was fortunate enough to see and help remove the mini-landslide that had left him out of his burrow.
• It features a lone pine from Gallipoli near the gate and is used as a memorial on ANZAC Day.
• The old kiosk, roads and scenic lookout were built by the unemployed during the Great Depression between 1929-32.
• The park was used by the Australian Army during WWII.
• The baths are a meeting place for the Oatley Amateur Swimming Club usually every fortnight in Spring- Autumn.
• The ‘Steamroller Park’ which features a old steamroller, had been subject to safety concerns and a few years ago the steamroller was moved, rotated, and given a safety fence and rail on the top deck.
• The Oatley Park Fun Run is a yearly event that is held in early April.
• During winter on a Saturday, the roads are closed for a number of hours for bike racing.

Please inform me of any historical inaccuracies and I will update the listing. Please feel free to write any memories of Oatley Park in the log.

If your are taking geo-kids, ask the kids to try and locate the cache once it has been re hidden. If they cannot locate it, this means it will be safe from mini-muggles.
