Ossett War memorial, recently moved from the end of Kingsway to its current position as part of the market place refurbishment. Please note that this is a very busy area on market days (tuesdays and Fridays). Has now been replaced with a nano
The Ossett war memorial to commemorate the 230 Ossett men who died in the First World War and those who died in WW2 is now located in Ossett Market Place after being moved from its original site at the bottom end of Kingsway.
After a protracted delay from first being suggested in 1919, Ossett's war memorial was finally unveiled on Remembrence Day, Sunday, the 11th November 1928. Despite the heavy rain, a large crowd gathered. After Lord Lascelles removed the union jack, which covered the statue, speeches were made, and a bugler sounded the Last Post, and then after a short period of silence, the Reveille was played. The national anthem and hymns were then sung.
From the Cache there is a good view of the town Hall.
In 1890 Ossett was granted its Borough Charter and some fifteen years later the building of the Town Hall began. The architect chosen was an A. W. Hanstock of Batley who had also designed Horbury Town Hall.
The site chosen was that of the grammar school in the Market Place which was demolished and the school moved to Park House, Storrs Hill Road. The foundation stone, under which was buried a sealed container containing photographs, local journals and coins, was laid on the 27 February 1906 by the Mayor of Ossett, Councillor J Hampshire Nettleton.
The cost of building and furnishing the new hall was £22,000.
On the official opening day 2 June 1908, a half-day holiday, was declared throughout the town in celebration of the event. Streets and buildings were decorated and a Civic procession followed by festivities in Gedham Field. An estimated 12,000 people gathered to watch the opening ceremony by the Mayor of Ossett, Councillor John T Marsden.
