ART LATCHAM
Magician Extraordinaire
1895 - 1979
Art was born in Glasgow, a few miles east of Stouffville in Uxbridge Township. His first jobs were working for neighbouring farmers, then homesteading in Saskatchewan while he was still a teenager. The isolation there was such that he was able to devote long hours to practising his conjuring skills. After fighting in France for 4 years in WWI he briefly became a motorman in Toronto.
Then he became well-known throughout North America as a magician. He preferred entertaining small groups with his card and coin tricks rather than performing on stage for large audiences, although he had done both. He left his large magic book collection to Stouffville Library.
His fortune however, was made in real estate and he is best known today as a town benefactor, having provided funds to benefit the arena, library and art gallery in Stouffville, the curling club in Unionville, the theatre in Lindsay, and community centres in Goodwood, Port Perry, Zephyr, Markham, Altona, Atha, Mount Zion, and Cedar Grove.
Latcham Gallery is part of the Care and Share building. This is the former site of Stouffville Library, Main Street , Stouffville.
The cache is smaller than a micro but larger than a nanno. It may not be winter friendly if we get a lot of snow.
