Cockenze has been the destination of the coal fields of Tranent and surrounding areas for almost as long as the coal has been mined. Originally, in the 13th century when the monks of Newbattle Abbey started up mining in Tranent a lot of the coal was transported down to Cockenzie and Prestonpans to supply the heat required to boil the water in the salt pans.
In 1722 the first railway in scotland was opened to improve the supply of coal to the harbour from where the coal would be shipped all over Britain to help power the industrial revolution. The harbour is used these days mainly for liesure craft but there is still an active boat builder located on the quayside.
The harbour was rebuilt in the the 19th century, the design work being completed by one Robert Stevenson famed for his work in the development of steam locomotives.
In recent times the coal fired power station has been the main beneficiary of the East Lothian coal fields. Work began on the construction in 1962 with the station being formally opened in May 1968. Coal was brought in from local pits such as Monktonhall, Bilston Glen and more recently Blindwells Open Cast Mine. These days all the coal is imported from abroad, the final leg of the journey being by train to the fuel station further in land.
The large ring and balls near the cache are grinding equipment used to crush the coal prior to feeding the furnaces.
