Guy Fawkes
The first in the "Historical Figures In
Geocaching" Series, this cache celebrates Guy Fawkes, whose
exploits can best be categorized by the phrase " It Seemed Like a
Good Idea At The Time..."
In 1604 Fawkes became involved with a small group, who planned to
assassinate King James by blowing up the House of Lords with a
secret stash of gunpowder they had concealed in the cellars under
Parliament. But alas, the King got wind of the plot, and ordered
the cellars searched. As luck would have it, Guy Fawkes was caught
red handed along with his explosive cache, the stores of Gunpowder.
Needless to say, Guy’s career as would be terrorist came to a
swift and bitter end.
In Britain, on the 5th of November, Guy Fawkes Day is celebrated by
lighting bonfires. Traditionally, an effigy (or "guy") representing
Fawkes is ritually burnt on the bonfire. The "guy" is normally
created by children, from old clothes, newspapers, and a mask. In
the weeks before bonfire night, children traditionally display the
"guy" and request a "penny for the guy" in order to raise funds
with which to buy fireworks.
Caution: There may be Muggles about - Night's and Weekends may be
the best times to search.
Be
sure to say 'Hi' to 'Guy' when you see him!
