Train buffs will enjoy visiting this quiet spot within the shadows of a historic coaling tower which remains a tribute to the days of the great steam engines that once rumbles across America's countryside. Perhaps Thomas and his friends once chugged through here. There's an ammo can hidden here, with treasures for young and old. If you take something, though, please leave something of equal or greater value so others can enjoy too!
Nelson Township was first settled in 1836 by Luther Stone and his sons, Burrill and Samuel. It took awhile for the town to really blossom, though, since other settlers weren't attracted to the community. Nelson grew slowly, but was accessible thanks to the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad Co. The city began to boom in 1902-1903, when the railroad built a new branch line off the main line that ran through Nelson. Large coal sheds were erected to carry coal on this new Nelson to Peoria Line. Learn more about the local history at www.leecountyhistory.com/lee_county/nelson.htm
