On lovely walkway between Huka Falls and Aratiatia Dam.
From here you get a great view of the iconic Wairakei Power Station.
The Wairakei Power Station first generated electricity in 1958. The power station and steamfield put NZ geothermal industry on the world stage as it was the first power station to utilise two phase fluid from it's steamfield to generate electricity.
Even today Wairakei and it's staff are still seen as leaders in the Geothermal field and attract visiting engineers and scientists from all over the world.
Wairakei still generates an amazing 157 MW of electricity, enough to supply 160,000 homes.
Enjoy this well formed walkway along the Waikato River to reach this elevated view of the station.
Less than one hour from Huka Falls should get you there. The GZ is just off the walkway, but no real climbing will be required.
Park at Huka Falls. (Be aware that the Huka Falls parking closes at night so don’t get locked in)
For the adventurist in you, take a walk from Spa Park or Aratiatia and grab a few other caches on the way. Very good Grade 2 MTB tracks between Spa Park and Aratiatia.
