My citujeme jej prvé známe vydanie v časopise „Life International“ zo 17. decembra 1962.

Ku cache:
Takže, kto pije vodu (X)? Kto vlastní zebru (Y)? V záujme jednoznačnosti musíme dodať, že každý z piatich domov je namaľovaný inou farbou a ich obyvatelia majú rôznu národnosť, vlastnia iné zvieratá, pijú iné nápoje a fajčia odlišné značky amerických cigariet. A ešte jedna vec: v podmienke 6, na pravo znamená tvoja pravá.

– Life International, December 17, 1962

Einstein’s puzzle

The zebra puzzle is a well-known logic puzzle. It is often called Einstein's Puzzle or Einstein's Riddle because it is said to have been invented by Albert Einstein as a boy, with the claim that Einstein said "only 2 percent of the world's population can solve it." However, there is no known evidence for Einstein's authorship; and the original puzzle cited below mentions brands of cigarette, such as Kools, that did not exist during Einstein's boyhood.
There are several versions of this puzzle. The version below is quoted from the first known publication in Life International magazine on December 17, 1962.

About cache:
Now, who drinks water (X)? Who owns the zebra (Y)? In the interest of clarity, it must be added that each of the five houses is painted a different color, and their inhabitants are of different national extractions, own different pets, drink different beverages and smoke different brands of American cigarets [sic]. One other thing: in statement 6, right means your right.
