IN 1948 THE US DEPARTMENT OF DEFENCE SENT MILITARY OFFICALS TO THIS LOCATION ON THE SAN RAFAEL SWELL TO CONSTRUCT A SERIES OF SUB-TERRAINIUM TUNNELS. MK WON THE CONTRACT TO DRILL AND SHOOT THE TUNNELS IN THE NAVAJO SAND STONE AND PREFORM A SERIES OF TESTS USING SURFACE PLACED EXPLOSIVES. LOCAL RESIDENTS WERE HIRED AS A CREW FOR TOP SECRET PROJECT AND NOT INFORMED OF THE INTENT. A TENT-CITY WAS ESTABLISHED AND A WELL DRILLED TO HOUSE THE WORKERS. THIS WAS 1 OF 6 PROJECTS CONSTRUCTED IN THE WESTERN STATES IN DIVERSE GEOLOGICAL FORMATIONS.
