Geocache Description:

Siam Center BTS and Center of Bangkok Transportation.
Discovery Center Mall, Paragon Mall, Siam Center Mall, Mah Boon Krong (MBK) and Siam Square shopping area.

Wat Pathumwanaram Ratchaworawiharn
Royal Thai Police Headquarters

In 1965 the first larger buildings on Siam Square' were constructed. The land owner was the neighboring Chulalongkorn University and the aim was to lease out land to collect money, from local shop owners, for benefiting the university.

Three popular movie theaters were also built here, showing both western and Thai movies:

Siam Theater (was built in 1967) The Lido Theater (was built in 1968) Scala (was built in 1970)

Also other tenants settled down here as; Siam Bowl, The Bangkok Bank Building and the British Council Building. Many investors contributed to make Siam Square an "upscale area", with modern shopping centers, high class hotels and restaurants.

In the 1970s there was an economical boom in Thailand and especially in the capital city of Krung Thep (Bangkok in Thai language). Many new shops as well as restaurants and fast food establishments opened their doors in the Siam Square area during this time. Opposite the Siam Theater a police station and a fire station was also opened in early 1980.

The development with bigger shopping centers, new businesses, and improved infrastructure (including sidewalks) continued in the 1990s and after the millennium. The famous skytrain was built in 1999 with Siam as the closest station. Also many tutor schools is located in the area, often focused on language studies (Thai and English), mathematics, physic studies, social sciences and chemistry. Many Thai teenagers are studying here to prepare themselves for university.

The air conditioned overpass bridge from MBK shopping mall and the many cafés, restaurants and shops has made this an attractive area for people to meet. Siam Square seems to especially attract young thais. The nearness to the beginning of Sukhumvit Road is probably also an important factor.

Wat Pathumwanaram Ratchaworawiharn
Located along the busy Ploen Chit Road , in between shopping malls and in the shadow of the sky train nests Wat Pathumwanaram Rajaworavihara or Wat Srapathum with it’s beautiful white chedi. Most tourists probably never even realize that there is a temple in this location. Especially in the heat of the day this is a good place to get some rest and find some shade under the trees in the temples garden. It was built at the same time as Srapathum Palace during the reign of King Rama IV.

The Viharn of the temple houses important Buddha images, which were brought from Vientiane , Phra Serm and Phra Saen. The temple was built in 1853 and was surrounded by rice fields. Today, the temple is sandwiched between the Siam Paragon shopping complex and the Central World Plaza .

The temple was right in the middle of the political unrest in 2010 and was also undergoing renovation work when we visited in March and September 2010. The occupation by so many protesters has obviously left it's marks on the temple grounds, however it is always a good place for a meditation in the large hall behind the main temple buildings.

Wat Pathum Wanaram is a Buddhist temple in Bangkok, Thailand. It is located in the district Pathum Wan, between the two shopping malls Siam Paragon and CentralWorld, and across the street of Siam Square.
The temple was founded in 1857 by King Mongkut (Rama IV) as a place of worship near his Sa Pathum Palace. At the time of its founding the area was still only rice fields, only accessible via the Khlong Saen Saeb. The temple is a third class royal temple of the Thammayut Nikaya order. The full name of the temple is Wat Pathum Wanaram Ratcha Wora Viharn.

At the temple is the Phra Meru Mas, a reconstruction of the crematorium late Princess Mother of Thailand. Following her cremation at Sanam Luang in March 1996, her remains were transferred to these grounds in an elaborate procession. The crematorium is a rare example of ancient craftsmanship featuring ornate stencils and lacquered sculptures.

It represents Mount Meru, the heavenly abode of the gods.
