Hooligan here. I was one of the cachers that started after an article came from the clarion-ledger did an article on geocaching. Someone named, Psychedelicdog made a discussion board for the soon to be MSGA. When he stopped up keep of the sight Southdeltan picked up the forums and continued the tradition. Later, Southdeltan gave up the site and I took it over when Deltadawg who was helping with the site got too busy. Finally, Dirty and Webchimp took over and now you have the MSGA as you know it today. So I have been around for a long time. Not sure if that makes me a charter member or not but pretty close!
How long will you work on puzzle caches before you give up?
Puzzle caches arent my thing so I dont spend a lot of time on them, and if they are caches that involve math, I have a friend that teaches math and she likes the math challenges. I usually work on them a little bit and then let her figure it out.
What town/ areas have you most enjoyed caching in?
Most of my caching has been in Mississippi, but I like the Coast/Hattiesburg area the best. I suppose it is because I worked that area for a bunch of years when I worked at the State Board of Contractors and the fact I was born and raised down there.
How long have you been geocaching, and what was your first find?
Joined January 30, 2003. found my first few caches without a GPS. I just went out and found them using the method of, HEY if I were going to hide the cache this is where I would hide it.
Who usually goes with you when you go caching?
Me, Myself and I. If I had to say who I cached with the most often, I would have to say Wray. Jeremy, my son likes caching but he isnt into the all day caching marathons so we have to do the few hour runs around and near the house.
Do you use paperless caching?
Yep, I use to do paperless caching and then a few years ago I changed jobs and had to return the company issued Ipaq. Then a month ago I got me a Palm Z21 off of Ebay for under $20. I am now back into paperless caching and I use GSAK and Cachemate.
What kind of geocaching rig do you use?
I used the Garmin Yeller for years then Christmas I got me a Garmin Legend, I know that I can start a Garmin vs Magellan argument, but I suppose because I started out using the Garmin I just find them easier to use. I also, have discovered that Garmin will run forever on a set of batteries. A fellow cacher uses a Lowrance and I can use the used batteries in my gamin a full caching trip of about 8 hours.
Why would you recommend anyone else to take up geocaching?
I always recommend geocaching to everyone I talk to. I even recommend it to my students. I have taught grade school students about geocaching for math and geography class. (Ordered pairs and well geography). Why do I recommend it? Because I enjoy the places that it takes me, the interesting places and the people I have met. LSUFan doesn't count, I do try to keep the fact that I know him a secrete.
Are you originally from Mississippi?
I was born and raised in Mississippi, I always swore that I would leave the state when I finished college but have you checked the cost of living in other places? To be exact I was born on a cold day in January on the Back Bay of Biloxi Mississippi (Howard Memorial – now a State office building and supposedly haunted). My dad said he knew the world was in trouble because it was so cold that the saltwater was freezing along the shore of the back bay.
What was your first event ever attended?
Metro Area Cachers Lunch, April 12, 2003
How many caches have you found?
As I write this I have found 652, I hope by the time you read this I am close to 700.
Which type of cache container do you prefer over the rest?
I prefer ammo cans over other caches. I really enjoyed locationless caches and I like virtual caches and webcam caches. I know some people dont consider locationless caches but they were great.
What was the most famous cache that you have found?
I think that the most famous cache would have been Haley's Forgotten (GCAFEA). This is the cache that started it all. I was one of the people that started caching after reading about geocaching in The Clarion-Liar when they did a story with Archie and SuperSquid, about what else Geocaching.
