Graham was settled in 1871 by the Graham brothers, Gustavus and Edwin. The post office opened in 1873. Graham became the county seat in 1874 and the newspaper srarted in 1876. In 1877, 40 cattlemen met and founded the Stock-Raisers' Association of North-West Texas to fight cattle theft in the region. This group later merged with other regional associations to become the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association. A limestone courthouse was built in 1884 from stone quarried east of town. Destroyed by fire in the 1930s, the east door still stands on the courthouse square.
