Geocache Description:

You're looking for a nano in what can be a very public spot during the warmer months, or on nice weekends.

It's very popular with walkers, dog walkers and cyclists so stealth is a must and you might find yourself adjusting those pesky shoelaces!

Please note the cache is not IN the tunnel, as the GPS might struggle!

The tunnel was originally built to take the Ashbourne to Buxton train line underneath the town but was closed when the railway disappeared and only in the last decade has it been reopened to the public as a bridleway.

It's now right at the start of the popular Tissington Trail and runs 390 yards between the town of Ashbourne and the National Park-owned Mappleton Lane Car Park, which has a cycle hire, toilets and a kiosk.

The tunnel is well lit so this is a good cache at any time of day, probably better done during darkness as it'll be quieter.

It can be done as a cache and dash if you park in the car park, but remember it is a pay and display facility so don't abuse the hospitality without putting money in the machine!

If you're lucky you might hear the bizarre but fascinating result of an East Midland's Arts project that is installed in the centre of the tunnel.

Sensors will pick up your movement and play a recording of traditional railway sounds. It's almost spooky but very interesting.

You'll be lucky to hear it though as it seems to be very sporadic. Perhaps you could let me know in your logs if it played for you.

From this spot you can take a walk or bike ride along the Tissington Trail, or just use it as a base to walk through the tunnel and explore Ashbourne, which has a few other of my caches.
