Geocache Description:

The Florida apple snail is the largest freshwater snail in North America. Apple snails are exceptionally well adapted to tropical regions with periods of drought alternated with periods of excessive rainfall.

The main characteristic of this family of snails (Ampullaridae) is that to breathe, they have both a gill and an air sac that functions as a lung. Their gill allows them to extract oxygen from the water. If the water does not contain enough oxygen they can use their lung. To use the lung, snails climb near the water surface where they use their siphon to pump in air.

Florida apple snail is perhaps best known as the primary food source of the snail kite, but it is much more than that. The apple snail is an integral part of Florida's marshes.

As you walk the trail, you will see discarded apple snail shells. Looks like someone has been eating well!

The cache is a small lock ‘n lock container.

This cache has been placed with permission from the CREW Trust and the South Florida Water Management District.
