Geocache Description:

Reading all the positive log entries on the website, we (Hurricane Luke) have decided to place two more caches around here to visit. Open Bay Heights & Four Islands. We promise these are the last we will place around here… ;).

If Open Bay and Open Bay Heights did not phase you, take a walk around to a unnamed peninsula we call “Four Island Point”. From the Southern end of Open Bay onwards, no longer are you following a well marked track, it’s up to you to decided where you should place your next step. Animal trails are a guide, but are no shape to bring you to the cache unscratched.

The coastline transforms from a tame well used area into a rugged, desolate and pure expanse which continues southward for many miles. You will first pass a rocky outcrop at the end of Open Bay, then not far on, pass another stand of ancient karaka’s which have been shaped and deformed by the wind of many decades.

Another 5 minutes of walking and you will pass a truly giant slip which must have occurred many years ago. Please walk along the coast for the section where the slip influences the land.

Just a bit more walking and you will arrive at GZ. Four Island Point. The cache is not located on the point (which is tidal in nature), but on the coast behind it. If you were lucky enough to pick a time and day without a high tide, ascend the slopes of the point and admire the view of southern Wellington coastline, the South island (even the Kaikoura ranges are visible), Mana island to the north and Kapiti to the distant north.

We challenge anyone to walk farther onwards from here. Even at low tide, it wouldn’t exactly be easy to continue onwards. You are blocked by near impassible tidal rocks and waves. Although, if you back track a wee bit, it looks like you can get around the point by climbing up and over. After that, it looks like there's a long beach scramble to get down to Makara.

We completed the 4.5km one way journey in 1 hour 25 minutes. Allow yourself 3 hours to complete the whole 9km return trip. Enjoy and don’t forget to bring a camera and a drink!

The cache was replaced 26 December 2019 with a 1 LT Sistema container. It contains :
- the Logbook
- Geocaching Notice
- swag

There is a pen in the container but best to BYOP! Have fun and enjoy the walk.
