Geocache Description:

Follow the path of the Athens Civil War battles. Coordinates listed are not the cache location just the starting point of your quest. This cache is also part of N Al Civil War Trail caches passport available at http://www.northalabama.org/geocache

This cache is part of a series of North Alabama Civil War Trail. A passport will be available from http://www.northalabama.org/geocache. To locate the cache and sign the log just follow the trail and answer a few questions. There are lots of other caches in the area so make a day of it and conquer Athens caches and educate yourself to the Civil War battles around Athens. Good luck and enjoy the history Start your smiley quest at the old Athens Rail Road station. Trains still pass thru town but no longer stop for passengers. The Rail Road station now houses the Limestone County Archives and is located at 34 48.158 n, 86 58.210W. How many full hours is the Archives open on the days they are open? Colonel Turchin of the 37th Indiana Regiment led the troops and plundered Athens. The Colonel was court martialed for his actions. How many days before the court marital was he promoted to Brigadier General (E) Move on to the remains of the old earthen Fort Henderson 34 47.843 n, 086 58.761 w. There is still a part of one of the walls standing just north of the historical marker. W. Walk up and around and imagine what it was like 147 years ago. There are several caches along the Richard Martin National Recreation Trail, a chance to get out and stretch your legs and pick up a few more smileys. Discover (C) how many guns were in Morton’s battery? (W) what is the hundreds digit in the number of rounds fired by the Confederate artillery battery. (G) add the three digits of the number of survivors that surrendered. A little north and east of here is the Town of Elkmont not much here now but an interesting community go explore. Visit the near-by caboose or head on down the trail to Sulphur Creek Trestle Cache. The information here can be obtained from the historical marker at 34 55.751n, 86 58.399 w. (AB) add 14 to the total of the digits in the year L & N became part of the Seaboard System. You are getting close to the cache location and a smiley. From here head south to the Athens City Cemetery 34 48 235n, 86 57.813w. You will find a monument dedicated to the unknown confederate soldiers. A little se and up the hill is a monument to the Confederate soldiers that lost their lives in and around Athens 34 48.221n, 86 57.796 w. (V) can be calculated by subtracting 3 from the number of unkown headstones around the monument dedicated to the confederate soldiers lost in and around Athens To find (W) subtract 20 from the total of the headstones in the outer circle of headstones surrounding the monument. Finally the last unknown is (Y) what is the last digit of the year the monument was dedicated? The tour will take you around north Alabama to visit 20 historic sites. It will not be necessary to pay an admission charge to find any of the caches although some may charge admission to tour their facility. A paper punch will be in the cache and should be used to punch the appropriate spot on the passport. If you choose to find the cache before all caches and the passport are available just punch a piece of paper with the cache name and date found, this will be accepted for your coin. 200 trackable geocoins are available to the first 200 cachers to complete the series.
