Jack Cade was an ex-soldier who led a rebellion against Henry VI in AD 1450 His party was made up mainly of peasants and farmers who objected to forced labour, corrupt courts, and seizure of lands.
He gathered his mob in Sevenoaks, Kent where they defeated a government troops sent to disperse them. Cade then led his men to London where they gathered more followers to the cause. They called for social change and the relieving of heavy taxes levied against them due to the Hundred Years War which was draining the treasury’s coffers. They stormed the Tower of London but failed to take over the fortress. There they killed the Archbishop of Canterbury and Sir James Fiennes who was Henry VI’s treasurer. They cut off their heads and placed them on poles so that they appeared to be kissing each other.
The royal troops regrouped and fought the rebels to a standstill. They arranged a truce after Cade handed over a list of demands which the royal officials promised would be met and in turn he handed over his men to receive a royal pardon. But neither the king or Parliament agreed to this, and after a warrant was issued for Cades arrest he fled London.
The Sheriff of Kent Alexander Iden pursued Cade and caught him on July 12th 1450. Cade was mortally wounded and died on his way back to London where his corpse was hung, drawn and quartered and his head placed on a pole on London bridge.
William Shakespeare later dramatised the rebellion in his play Henry VI.
