Geocache Description:

Ratchadamri BTS Station and Royal Bangkok Sports Club, Regent Hotel, AUA and north end of Lumpini Park.

A grand old road that starts at the Erawan Shrine and ends in front of the dusit Thani Hotel. Mostly owned by the crown it is a grand avenue from days gone past with the sky train running down the middle of it.

Royal Bangkok Sports Club
From the station platform one can look out upon the RBSC. Founded in1901 by King Chulalongkorn the club has been a central part of upper Bangkok society. Near to impossible to become a member except by being the child of one the club is old fashioned and keeps to traditions that seem long gone.
The club hosts an 18 hole golf club, a horse racing track, swimming, tennis, squash and many other sports. In 1978 RBSC acquired the lease to the Polo Club a small riding club off of wireless road and rebuilt the establishment to include many of the facilities of RBSC but also adding riding facilities for the members. Members of the RBSC have use of both clubs where as Polo club members only can use the Polo Club. (Membership to the Polo Club is open to general public)

Erawan Shrine
The Erawan Shrine is a Hindu shrine that houses a statue of Phra Phrom, the Thai representation of the Hindu creation god Brahma. A popular tourist attraction, it often features performances by resident Thai dance troupes, who are hired by worshippers in return for seeing their prayers at the shrine answered.

The Erawan Shrine was built in 1956 as part of the government-owned Erawan Hotel to eliminate the bad karma believed caused by laying the foundations on the wrong date.

The hotel's construction was delayed by a series of mishaps, including cost overruns, injuries to laborers, and the loss of a shipload of Italian marble intended for the building. Furthermore, the Ratchaprasong Intersection had once been to put criminals on public display.

An astrologer advised building the shrine to counter the negative influences. The Brahma statue was designed and built by the Department of Fine Arts and enshrined on 9 November 1956. The hotel's construction thereafter proceeded without further incident. In 1987, the original hotel was demolished and the site used for the Grand Hyatt Erawan Hotel.
