Geocache Description:


Welcome to the Island's second Letterbox Hybrid cache, the Ice Boat Post (see also, (GC1JCWC) Spud Island Post).

Please make sure you do not take items from the zip lock baggy as trade items -- they are meant to stay in the cache!

The cache is an ammo can. In a separate zip lock baggy inside the cache there is a rubber stamp, ink pad and logbook. If you have your own personalized stamp, use it when signing the letterbox logbook. Then use the cache's unique stamp in your own letterboxing logbook.

Background on the Cache & Stamp:

The color red was chosen for the stamp's ink pad because PEI is known for its red soil and numerous "red dirt roads". The "ice boat" commemorates a new mail service begun in 1827 from Cape Traverse, PEI across the icy Northumberland Strait to Cape Tormentine, NB. The ice boat was a small open craft, sturdy and fitted with oars, a small sail, straps for hauling, and runners so it could be used in water or on ice. Soon the ice boat became standard equipment for the service. With calculated daring, ice boat expeditions conquered drifting ice and sudden storms to bring mails safely to land. Until the first car ferry ice breaker began duty nearly a 100 years later, the Capes Ice Boat Service afforded the quickest and most reliable means of winter communication and mail service between PEI and the mainland.

The history of ice boats is full of tales of tragedy and incredible suffering. An original Northumberland Strait ice boat is preserved in the Gateway Village tourism complex in Borden-Carleton near the Confederation Bridge.
