Geocache Description:

Frankton Frolics are a series of caches in and around the hamlet of Welsh Frankton which sits midway between Whittington village and the market town of Ellesmere, astride a ridge known as The Brow, and has stunning views across the Shropshire Plain.

When a major breach happened below Welsh Frankton locks in 1936, the decision was taken to abandon this stretch of the canal. Official closure to navigation was finally ratified by Act of Parliament in 1944. Only twenty years later the battle began to reopen it again, as it was one of the first canals to be considered for reopening by the emerging canal enthusiast movement in the 1960s, and a long and dogged restoration campaign began. At the waypoint given you will find some more information. Having been restored by the Inland Waterways Association the locks were finally re-opened on Sept ABth 1987. Cross over the canal to the second stage co-ordinates. The narrowboat Cressey was converted for leisure use in the dry dock opposite here. Tom Rolt used it for his journey around the canals, which he chronicled in his book "Narrow Boat", in 193C. The Inland Waterways Association was formed in 194D. There are E number of windows facing the canal on the ground floor of the house opposite. Now you have the final cache co-ordinates: N EB EB.C0C W00B ED.E0C Please ensure cache is re-hidden well. *******Congratulations to Shropshire Seekers and Big Farmer Giles on being First To Find!*******
