This Cache is situated near to the former RAF Bromley site, during the war there were seven masts here, four wooden and three steel, my Great-Grandad helped to guard them.
The guard hut still exists, and although now on private land, it can be seen from the road. I have way-marked it, if you would like to have a look. If you look to the north of the guard hut on the satellite map view, you will be able to clearly see the bases of 4 of the 7 masts that used to be here.
The Bromley radar station was part of the ‘Chain Home’ system, providing long range early warning for the eastern approaches to the Thames estuary. Chain Home was the codename for the ring of coastal early warning system stations built by the British before and during World War II. The system otherwise known as AMES Type 1 (Air Ministry Experimental Station) consisted of radar fixed on top of a radio tower mast, called a 'station' to provide long-range detection of aircraft.
