Geocache Description:

Another in the Hidden Past series of caches.

What awaits you with this cache is an old Gun Emplacement which was built during World War II (circa 1942). This old military site is similar to the site on the eastern side of Lithgow only it has fared better over time. There used to be several other sites like these dotted over the mountain sides adjacent to the Lithgow valley but these sites were dummy sites with the Bowenfels and Clwydd sites being the only two real batteries. There is a Lithgow Mercury story on a dummy site at (visit link)

The South Bowenfels battery and Clwydd battery are remnants of the World War II network of defence sites and, in particular, anti-aircraft gun batteries. The sites were used to protect important Lithgow mining and manufacturing industries and the local transport network through the war. Along with the similar Clwydd Battery located on Scenic Hill at the other end of the Lithgow Valley, the South Bowenfels complex is believed to be the only anti-aircraft battery of its type in NSW (and possibly Australia).

There is also a cache located at the Clwyyd Battery called Hidden History 7 Air Defence by Riblit GCKHBN (visit link) and if you have not already done it, it is well worth a visit.
