Geocache Description:

Placed by the 1st Dundas Cub Scouts

The congegration of St Pauls United Church can be traced back to 1795, when Methodist preacher Major George Neal first visited the community of Cootes Paradise (which grew into the town of Dundas). The Methodists worshiped in a church on Ogilvie St from 1830 to 1855 and at the current location from 1855 until the present. In 1931 the church was completely destroyed by a fire that started in a neighboring barn. A new church was built on the same location and was in use in 1933. St Paul's has undergone many additions and renovations since then to accommodate it's large congregation and the many community groups that they are generous enough to share their facilities with. Some of the groups are the Mens Group (who host breakfast every Saturday morning - hint hint), a phenomenal Model Railroad Club, acting classes, music lessons, and of course Scouts.

St Paul's has sponsored the 1st Dundas Scouting Group since 1928. The totem for the cub pack has small metal-rimmed tags bearing the names of previous Cubs and the years they participated dating back to the 1950's. There are layers upon layers of tags. They make a peaceful rattling sound if gently shaken and it is important for our youth to realize that they are part of a strong tradition in our community. I wonder where these former cubs are now, all of these years later.

This cache will be maintained by the 1st Dundas Cub Scouts - "A" and "B" Packs as part of their Pack Specialty badge. Please limit tradeables to Scouting crests or related paraphernalia and keep in mind that youth will be monitoring this cache frequently. We welcome any of your scouting reminiscences.

"A church is not the buildings, but the people who have worshiped there and carried on Christian work from pioneer times to the present." Just as the longevity of the congregation is not measured in the age of the building, the role of the church in the community can not be gauged on Sunday morning alone. Indeed, St. Paul's is busy throughout the week. Discreetly completing this cache should be a Challenge. Be Prepared for a busy environment. Share your experiences with us. Do Your Best.
