"Whenever you read a good book, it's like the author is right there, in the room talking to you, which is why I don't like to read good books.”
You'll find lots of good books not far from this cache.
One of West Van's first libraries was set up around 1919 in a local merchant's dry goods & clothing store. Just over 30 years later, the library moved into a permanent home, West Vancouver Memorial Library, which was officially opened on November 11, 1950 (that's why its address is 1950 Marine Drive). The Memorial Arch located directly across Marine Drive was upgraded around the same time, and is the site of the annual community Remembrance Day services. Since 1979 a traditional late morning tea has been served in the Library immediately following the services.
Throughout most of its existence, the West Van Memorial Library has boasted the largest per capita readership of any library in Canada. To keep pace with this popularity, there have been several additions and renovations made to the building - 1957, 1962, 1977, 1993, and the most recent in 2003. As a result of all these changes, very little of the original structure remains.
However, if you are visiting the area during library hours, you might want to step inside to check out a breathtaking artifact from the original building. To your right as you enter the main hall you will see a large stained glass window. This window is a reproduction of a Sir Frank Dicksee painting called "Harmony", and it was donated by the family of Lieut. Horace Gordon Stone, who died in active service in 1918. The window had been a featured piece when it was installed in the southern wall of the original library building, not far from its present location. I can recall seeing the bookshelves dappled with many-coloured beams of light when sunshine filtered its way through the stained glass. (Check link to related web page & scroll down slightly).
Due to its proximity to a couple of nearby caches, you'll face a short walk across a library parking area to find this container. There can be all sorts of muggles around at all times of the day so please exercise your best stealth practices. You would probably blend in better if you carried a book or two with you.
The container is rather unusual and it definitely has no room for swag. Please remember to bring a writing implement with you, please replace the cache as you found it and, as always, keep thinking Deep Thoughts.
