Geocache Description:

English

This earthcache brings you to the beautiful waterfalls on the river Una on the Bosnian-Croatian border. Water falls in several cascades to the depth 17m in the width of fifty meters and leads to narrow canyon. This place is very favourite for rafters, some of them talks about this river like the most beautiful in Europe. It could be caused by absolutely clear water and its azure colour.

The way to the cache is not easy. On the waypoint S1 take unpaved road and go about ten kilometers. There you can park near the memmorial to victims of the war in 1992. There is picnic place too. The cache is short walk away. You can admire beautiful waterfalls, but look at the rock and stones around too. From the viewpoint you can descent to the river. There you can see strong draft of the river and interesting circular holes and caves in the rock.

The rock around is limestone, sedimentary rock composed largely of the minerals calcite and/or aragonite, which are different crystal forms of calcium carbonate (CaCO3). Like most other sedimentary rocks, limestones are composed of grains; however, most grains in limestone are skeletal fragments of marine organisms such as coral or foraminifera. If you drop hyudrochloric acid (HCl) on the stone, it start to fizz as carbonic oxid goes away. It is clear proof that the stone is limestone.

The limestone is rather soft rock. The circle holes in it (called potholes) occure due to draft of water with fragments of harder rock. Fragments collide with limestone and slowly create the holes in the rock.

To claim the earthcache please send me answers via my profile:

1) If you leave the viewpoint (earthcache coordinates) towards the river, there is several small caves below it (about 1m wide). How much?
2) What is the average diameter of potholes near the river?
3) Optional – put a picture of you, GPS and waterfalls to the log

Cesky

Cesta he kesi není tak úplne jednoduchá.

3) Nepovinné – k logu dejte fotku sebe, GPS
