For more stories, history, and pictures of the towns of Olla, Tullos, and Urania, stop in at the Cultural Center in Olla. You just may well meet someone born and raised on Castor Creek. As a reminder, if it crawls, walks, runs, flies, poisons, stings, or stinks it’s here. Dress accordingly. So, slowdown neighbor and enjoy your visit.
This cache is to recognize the 100th anniversary of LaSalle Parish and like all Fatman and Robin caches we will be offering our FTF Sweat Rag Award.
This church, established in the 1850’s, was the center point for the area to later become the settlement of Tullos. The people of this area got their land through homesteads, pattens or land grants. In 1891 the Iron Mountain and Southern Railroad came through a short distance west of this site along which the town was laid out. This was the most western part of Catahoula Parish and borders Winn Parish along Castor Creek one mile west. In 1906, Henry Hardtner, the founder of Urania Lumber Company, suggested that Catahoula Parish be divided to form a new parish from its western portion. Citizen in the Olla, Urania, and Tullos areas were especially supportive of this given the fact it was a 35 mile trip to the parish seat in Harrisonburg to conduct their legal business. As with any change there was some opposing this idea but enough support was gained to present it to the state legislature in Baton Rouge. After many meetings and campaigning an election was finally held in 1909. When the poles closed, the interested parties here on the west side sent Seville Russell, owner of the fastest horse in these parts to Harrisonburg to see how the vote was going. On arrival he found the nays were far ahead. With this news he came full gallop back to report his findings. A short meeting was held and luckily few more ballots were found. With these in hand, horse and rider made a fast trip back to Harrisonburg. A quick tally reveals the nays now have only a narrow lead. Again, Seville mounted his horse to make another blared eyed full bore race back to the west side with the news. Another poll was taken hoping enough votes would be cast to swing the election in their favor. Seville and horse were back on their way to Harrisonburg with the final ballots. It was later rumored that some voted twice and may have had help from the deceased too. But, you know how rumors go.
So, on January 1, 1910 LaSalle Parish was established, most likely by one tired horse and a 10 vote margin.
