Geocache Description:

Cache is a small centrifuge tube located along the Bike & Hike trail. No tricks on these hides, just straight forward and camo'd from the public. ‘Most’ are at or near head level and narely require dismounting from your bike. Because of the heavy traffic that can be experienced on portions of this trail, I do NOT recommend that children partake in this adventure.

This Rubbertown tour takes you through the sights, sounds, and smells for the full industrial experience.

Welcome to the "gateway" of Rubbertown: Lake Dreamland.

Developed by Ed Hartlage in the 1930's, Lake Dreamland was an attempt to build a lake front vacation resort for the wealthy in Louisville. The develompment began by damming Beaver's Run creek cottages and obtained it suave name when critics told Hartlage the idea was merely a dream, never to amount to anything.

Lake Dreamland's fate was sealed after the flood of 1937 devastated the area and put a hault to much of the development. Public utilities were never established and the poorly built cottages were rented at low rates.

In the 1940's, Rubbertown industrial area began to take shape, and with it, the industry workers began to build homes around the 'resort' area. Hartlage also built an ill-fated dance hall that was credited with being the first place in Louisville to hear live rock-n-roll music. The hall, named Hartlages Barn and renamed Club El Rancho burnt down in 1967 after 10 yrs of operation.

Ed Hartlage passed away in 1980 and residents were able to buy property within the estate and establish more of a residential area. The neighborhood entrance and firedepartment are located near this cache.
