A park and museum celebrating Prince Edward County's rich maritime history.
In the days before people and goods were transported by train and road, they had to be transported by ship. Prince Edward County had several major ports in the days of sail. However, these ports (like many along the shores of the Great Lakes) became obsolete as large lakers replaced small sailing vessels, and it became more economical to transport people and goods over land. In addition to shipping and transportation, people made a living in the local commercial fishery, and by harvesting ice for cold storage in the days before electric refrigeration. Also, prior to the construction of the Murray Canal, ships were unable to pass from Presqu'ile Bay into the Bay of Quinte, and had to sail out and around Prince Edward County. Consequently, there are numerous shipwrecks surrounding The County, as the shoals and hidden rocks claimed many a vessel.
This park celebrates the County's rich, local maritime history, and is filled with marine artifacts of local significance. The park is open to the public year-round, and the museum is open from May to October. The cache should be a relatively easy find, and contains several small trade items. Enjoy!
