An easy stroll along a coastal path to this cache that forms part of the Shipwreck Series. For the series methodology and more info visit SS: Shipwreck Series via the related web page link. The wreck itself occurred on the eastern side of Holbaai Punt (the next point to the east of where you now stand), but it is a private nature reserve so I had to place the cache here.
Isaphan means: A Persian rug characterized by hand-tied knots and ornamented with floral and animal patterns, usually on a deep red, blue, or green background.
The Isaphan was a British iron full-rigged ship of 1436 tons, built in 1876 by Richardson, Duck & Co, Stockton, and commanded by Capt D. Fergusson. She had a crew of 28. Wrecked at 01h20 on 3rd December 1886 in dense fog while on a voyage from Calcutta to London with a cargo of 2000 tons of wheat, bone dust, rape seed, poppy seed and linseed. No lives were lost.
Captain Fergusson, his wife, daughter and a boat crew of seven rowed from here to Fish Hoek beach. They left at 02h00. The weather conditions have not been recorded, so it is not known whether the prevailing South Easter was blowing, but it is still a remarkable feat to row over 28 nautical miles. They were initially assumed to have perished until they popped up at Fish Hoek.
She has been dived on and her bell has been recovered.
