Hills View #3 Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

TWO HATS: Ah well.. thats the end of Hills View #3 Im afraid. It certainly has gone... in fact according to the contractor I spoke to today when I visited what was left of GZ.. over 1000 tonnes of Earth and 300 tonnes of vegitation has been removed to "clean the area" to the local council. Between 2 and 5 metres of earth have been taken from the surface along with the roots of every plant and tree !

Maybe the other two HV caches are at risk now.... those that have been planning a visit had better do so sooner than later

Geocache Description:

A well hidden NANO sized Cache close to two other Hills View Caches. Room only for a log.

Access via Gravel footpaths from Victoria Rd or Portland Rd although you will need to follow grass covered footpaths through bracken, brambles and tall grass in the Summer months.
The area around the cache has very steep slopes and can be very muddy. Stout footwear is a must at any time of the year.
You are also close to Houses and Gardens so please be as quiet as possible in order to avoid attention from the Locals.

Muggle activity can be a problem in the Summer Months.

This area is known locally as "The Hills" and was once the site of no fewer than 5 Coal Mines which were the source of coal used by the Butterley company to produce Iron at their furnaces at their main works at Ripley 5 miles away.

In the centre of this area is a steep incline with a deep valley which was an incline railway driven by a stationary steam engine now occupied by the Somerfield / Coop supermarket, Village Chemist and Doctor Surgery a few hundred yards to the North West.
The Steam driven Stationary Engine was used to haul empty coal wagons from the lower regions of the Village to the top of these Hills where the Pit Heads were situated.

Several publications by the Selston Branch of the Workers' Educational Association are available which cover the History of our village. Most are available from Libraries. If you are interested in the Selston area Local History please email via GC

11-7-2012 Hide method changed once again to make it easier to find during the growing season.
Good Luck....
