Geocache Description:

A Cache on Loch Lomondside to mark the location of a water speed record in 1932.

This cache has been placed by the Mac Jenkins Gang, to remind everyone that at one point the world water speed record was set on Loch Lomond, my mother was at the event as a babe in arms. Castrol Oil chairman Lord Wakefield, was determined to bring the world water speed record back to Britain and after the death of Sir Henry Segrave a racing driver killed trying to break the record on Lake Windermere, he got Irish born Kaye Don, another racing driver to take over, at the helm.
On Monday 18th July 1932 at 5.25 in the morning Kaye Don took Miss England III to 117.43 miles per hour, to take the record, in the afternoon he re-broke this record doing 119.81 miles per hour over a measured mile, this was his average, even though he actually hit 120.5 miles per hour at one point, the first person ever to travel at more than two miles a minute on water.
His record only stood for 64 days, before it was again smashed by American Gar Wood, in Miss America X, on Tuesday 20th September 1932 at St. Clair River, Detroit, Michigan, USA
The national park sign that tells of this event can be found at N 56º 06.628 and W 004º 38.445. The cache is placed on the main cycle and footpath that leads from Balloch to Tarbet, up the west shore of Loch Lomond. It is 820 metres from the pay and display sign at the north end of the Luss Village car park, If walking with children or pets the cycle path is a safe scenic fifteen minute walk from the car park, For a cache and dash, there is a car park north of Luss on your left-hand side, which is even closer but does involve crossing the A82 Glasgow to Inverness trunk road, which can be busy and dangerous.
The cache is a clear lock and lock box about 100mm square, the original contents include a spoon, a slate, rubbers, pencils, and a homemade scoobie.
