The Esso Wheeling was an American T2 tanker of 10 172 tons, built in 1944 by the Alabama Dry Dock & Shipbuilding Co, Mobile, owned by the Standard Oil Company and commanded by Captain William White.
In modern days, marine oil spillage is one of the main threats for seabirds. The Esso Wheeling was wrecked here on 5 November 1948 at 24h00 while on a voyage from Santos to Abadan (fortunately in ballast). Some residue oil drifted towards Dyer Island, home to African penguins and other seabirds.
