The cache is not at the listed co-ordinates. Use this spot to park your car. Don't get fooled by the first waypoint, its not hard to figure out where you are supposed to be. You can use the transport provided to get to the second waypoint and then walk to the final coordinates or you could drive if you don't want to spend $2.
Durie Hill Tunnel, Elevator and Tower
Close to the southeast end of the City Bridge is one of Wanganui's more unusual features, an elevator leading to a monument on the top of Durie Hill. This is believed to be the the only earthbound elevator in the southern hemisphere.
A pedestrian tunnel leads 205m inside the hill to the elevator which then rises 66m to the top of the hill. There are good views from the top of the nearby memorial tower.
The Durie Hill War Memorial Tower is built from fossilised shell rock dated at more than two million years old. The tower is 33.5m tall and has 176 steps leading to the viewpoint. It offers excellent views of the city, Mt Taranak, Mt Ruapehu and the Tasman Sea.
A walkway offers an alternative route via the 191 steps up Durie Hill to the two viewpoints located at the top, one above the elevator's machinery room and the other on the nearby Memorial Tower.
The elevator is open Monday to Friday 7.30am to 6.00pm, Saturday 9.00am to 5.00pm, Sunday and public holidays 10.00am to 5.00pm.
