Geocache Description:

A quick cache and grab will secure this part of the Shipwreck Series. For the series methodology and more info visit SS: Shipwreck Series via the related web page link.

This 1200 ton British East Indiaman had made five voyages to China when she was captured in 1805 by the French Admiral Linois on board one of two French vessels off Ceylon. The ship was brought to Simon's Bay as a prize of war. On the morning of 19 September 1805 her cables parted and she ran aground after losing three anchors during a south-east gale. She was carrying a cargo of sandalwood and cotton, most of which was salvaged at the time of wrecking.

In 1993 the wreck became the focus of the first non-commercial maritime archaeological project in South Africa when members of the public, the Institute of Maritime Technology and the SAMM conducted a pre-disturbance survey and limited excavations on the site.
