The trail to Waipoo Falls is one of the most popular in Kokee State Park. Distance is 1.6 miles one way. Hikers are treated to spectacular views of Kauai's upland forests on the way the trail winds through a jungle dotted with wild yellow orchids and flame-red torch ginger -- and rewarded with serene pools surrounded by fragrant Kahili ginger when you arrive at the falls. However, please be aware that you will not be able to see the falls as this trail will take you to the top.
To find the trailhead from the junction of Waimea Canyon Drive and Kokee Road in Waimea Canyon drive 7.4 miles to Halemanu Road. This is located between mile markers 14 and 15. Parking is available on both sides of the road. Hike down the unpaved Halemanu Road to the valley floor. Then ascend the hill to a signed junction at 0.6 miles. You now leave the road and take the right fork towards the Canyon Trail. Continue along the Canyon Trail descending down a steep narrow gorge along the Kokee irrigation ditch. Climb up a short hill to a vista. At this point is a signed junction with the Black Pipe Trail. Continue along the Canyon trail to your right. Next you will arrive at a bare knoll overlooking the canyon. You will see a rocky arch in the distince. Continuing down the trail you will eventually encounter a T. The main trail goes right and this is also the direction toward the cache. You don't need to leave the trail to grab the cache.
PLEASE BE AWARE OF SEVERAL AREAS OF THE TRAIL WHERE THERE ARE STEEP DROPOFFS!
Don't forget to reward yourself with a refreshing splash in the pools above the falls.
