Geocache Description:

This cache is hidden along a still open but poorly maintained road. This road used to see a heavy amount of traffic, but in recent years it has become merely a scenic route for the locals as well as a haven for dirt bikes, ATVs and four wheel drive enthusiasts. The easiest way to get on to the road is via Business Route 6 right at the Eynon / Blakely border.

The cache itself is located on an old runaway truck ramp. These ramps are usually placed on roads with steep grades which may cause a vehicle's brakes to fail, especially truck breaks which often fail due to overheating. They typically provide a means to bring the vehicle to a more gradual stop than they would otherwise experience.

The ramps today come in several different varities, such as:
Truck Arrester Bed: A parallel route filled with gravel which uses rolling resistance to gradually stop the vehicle over time.
Gravity Escape Ramp: The same idea as an arrester bed, except that this gravel goes uphill and uses gravity to slow the truck. Typically found on steeper hills, the risk with having a truck use this to stop is the potential for the truck to roll backwards with no brakes once it reaches the top.
Sand Pile Escape Ramp: Same idea as the Gravity escape ramp but it uses sand instead of gravel, usually in order to keep construction costs lower. Sand is a poor choice because of the way it is affected by both moisture and colder temperatures.

It's often said that, "They don't make them like they used to" and for once, in the case of this ramp, I think you'll agree that's a good thing. When you look up the hill it is obvious that a vehicle could pick up considerable speed before reaching this ramp, which doesn't look very capable of "safely" stopping anything.

My uncle was a truck driver for Yellow for many years, and this cache is placed as a reminder to the dangers that truck drivers face while they deliver the materials we all need across the country each day.

The view at the top of the ramp is outstanding, especially at sunset. Please place the cache container back exactly as you found it. Be on high alert for muggles, as sometimes people just park at the top of the ramp with their SUVs to take in the view. I do not recommend doing this cache at night, as the Blakely Police routinely patrol this road at night looking for underage drinking parties.

Note: I don't force anyone to search for my geocaches. Please remember that you assume all responsibility when geocaching.
