Geocache Description:

After parking in Livermore travel west on the West Penn Trail. This flat hike will take you over two of the four stone arch bridges built in 1907. Terrain is a 3 because its a longer hike (little over 2 miles out and back) and a little bushwacking at the end. May be some water right off the trail. You can park outside of Blairsville to experience more of the trail and the rest of the bridges.

This trail follows the path of the Main Line Canal and the Portage Railroad that operated from 1830- 1864. to a tunnel which was built in 1830. The tunnel is now impassable due to the Conemaugh Dam Project. Water would leak out of the tunnels when the reservoir was at capacity.

In 1828, few people in America knew
what a tunnel was, so the canal commissioners
had to explain that " a tunnel
is like a well, but dug on the horizontal.

One of the earliest tunnels in America was built through Bow Ridge near this site by state engineer Alonzo Livermore in 1828. The tunnel was 817 feet long, 14 feet high and 22 feet wide – wide enough for a canal prism 15 feet wide at bottom, 15½ feet wide at top, and five feet deep, bordered by a towing path 6½ feet wide.

This cache is part of the Main Line Canal GeoTrail, a chance to experience the Pittsburgh-Harrisburg Main Line Canal Greenway through geocaching. The Greenway is a linked network of land and water trails, tracing the path of the historic Main Line Canal. These caches may be found in an outdoor recreation destination, a key heritage location or an environmental educational site- all ways the Greenway is making new connections between old neighbors. You must find at least 4 geocaches in each of the Main Line Canal Greenway Clusters and record the codes found at each cache in the Logbook. Once you have completed the MLCG Logbook you can receive a MLCG trackable geocoin. Remember CITO can be practiced all year long and Leave No Trace.
