If you live in Scranton or nearby, you've seen this monument, possibly hundreds of times, but few actually know what it memorializes. You might think it has something to do with the areas coal heritage, but you would be wrong. It's also believed the monument is made of coal. Fifty percent wrong there, too. You'll have to see for yourself.
The Gateway to Scranton was a first in Pa. and what the monument commemorates no longer exists, as contemporary engineers moved on from simple to complicated designs, and, like the metric system, Americans irrationally disfavored this design, though Europeans have had no trouble at all with the concept.
I don't want to spoil the ending, you'll just have to read the plaque.
Small black camo'd tube container. Work crews visit the area several times during the year, so please replace container as found.
Difficulty rating is so high because parking is difficult, though plentiful. If you are Northbound (out of Scranton) on Rt 11, you'll need to go all the way to the mall to turn around and come back. Southbound is the only way to find parking, but it's a scary pull-off if traffic is heavy.Southbound onto Oak Street is NOT the way to go.
Terrain rating is high because, even though you'll only take less than 100 steps, the last 15 or so are a pain. If it's raining, your socks will get wet. If there's snow on the ground, it will pack all around your ankles to the tops of your shoes. If it's a bright, sunny, perfect day, the shrubbery will deposit dozens of needle-like leaves in your shoes, right where your ankle is, making every step feel like there are porcupines in your shoes and oh,yeah-this will also happen if it's wet or snowy.
