Growing up in Leucadia I wanted to take a moment to reminisce about how much this area has changed since my childhood.
Local History Lesson From My Brain:
What many locals may not realize, is that Leucadia Boulevard was once named Woodley Road, and ran from I-5 to the Ecke Flower Fields, where it dead ended (the spot where Encinitas Ranch Golf Course now resides). The spot where the cache is located was scrub brush during my childhood, and spots like The Forum shops, REI, Sports Authority, etc. did not exist. El Camino Real was a rural two lane road that ran from the four way stop sign at Encinitas Boulevard, to the two lane road that was La Costa Avenue. During the big development boom of the late eighties/early nineties, a development company worked with the City of Encinitas to develop the Encinitas Ranch Community and golf course. There was much local discontent and protest, as concerns regarding traffic along Leucadia Blvd./Woodley Ave. we debated before approval. Eventually, the town acquiesced and Leucadia Boulevards was put through, opening up the developed communities around El Camino Real to coastal access, as well as access for coastal residents to the new shopping areas east of the golf course. For a time, the only access (before the road was opened) was through the Encinitas Ranch Golf Course parking lot, and staff there actually attempted to block passage with a large boulder! The only thing that is constant is change, and now many of the flower based businesses in the area have sold their land to high end home developers, along with road improvements, sidewalks, and landscaped traffic medians.
The Woodley Avenue Cache harkens back to a simpler time in Leucadia, when San Dieguito was a "High School," The Sub Palace was run by a guy named Steve and situated next to the 7-Eleven on Vulcan/Leucadia Blvd., Sunset Surfboards was situated in the building now housed by Nytro Sports, VG Donuts was a small coffee and donut operation situated in Cardiff By The Sea, and Lou's Records was on the corner of Hwy 101 and D St. Hope you enjoy grabbing this cache and visualizing what the area looked like in the early 1970's, before the population exploded and developer vision changed the area forever.
