Geocache Description:

Discover the beauty of Norton Common with this wander through Letchworth’s Local Nature Reserve. This multi-cache takes you around the common before directing you to Ewungelema* to find a small lock-n-lock cache in a camouflage bag. You will need about 30-40 minutes, but please take longer to enjoy the area.

Previous finders please note that the final cache location has moved 126ft from the original as of February 2014. All other waypoints remain unchanged.

Letchworth’s famous black squirrels inhabit the common, along with muntjac, birds and wild flowers. Discover the Pix Brook with resident water voles, walk along the Ridge & Furrow avenue of trees and enjoy the wildflower meadow. Skate ramps, picnic tables and a children's play area are available all year round and in the summer you can swim in the heated open air pool. [Map] Please avoid walking through the areas marked as "Spring" on the map. You can reach all parts of this cache along well-trodden paths without any 'bush-whacking'. Please be careful with young children near the water and we suggest wearing wellies in winter for the muddy paths.

Park at North 51 59.009 West 000 13.566 or North 51 59.082 West 000 13.412 and head for North 51 59.111 West 000 13.405 to find the kite flying above the tank.

Use the kite's number as ABC and the tank's as DEF. The Roman Mark can be used as G. Then head for North 51 59.(G/2)(A+G)C West 000 13.(B-G)CD. Stay a while to be educated and note the number 4593ZY. Before you leave, also take a count of ALL the short posts in front of you. This is HJ.

Then you can finally make your way to the cache at North 51 5Z.EYC West 000 1J.BFD to pick up lots of geoswag. Please take careful note of where the cache is hidden and try to replace as found.

Now take time to enjoy the common before you head home and don’t forget “Cache In Trash Out”.

*Ewungelema (or Uwungelema) is the tree of bounty from an old Southern African tale. Find out more with a simple web search. My brother and I grew up with this story, read by Wendy Craig, on an LP called “In Front of the Children” (1970). ("Sshhh ... wait 'til I get to the tree.")
