Once upon a time, there was a springwater in the southwest of this crossing and Edge of Takakura forest.
It called "Honsawa(sorce of spring)" around in the spring. This region above Honsawa came to be called Sawakami(meaning: Upperside of spring).
This is an origin of the name of a place.
There was a history as the Owari blacksmith birthplace around here, and the sword tool of the plastron was made in this region.
There was sawakami train garage near sawakami crossing the tram's having been running in sawakami crossing in north, south, east, and west in the age of the Showa era.
The look is lost along with abolish of the tram now.

その昔、この交差点の南西、高座（たかくら）の森のはずれに、湧き水があった。
その泉のあたりを「本沢」といった。
本沢の上方のこの地域は「沢上」と呼ばれるようになった。
これが地名の由来である。
このあたりは尾張鍛冶発祥の地としての歴史があり、この周辺で金山鐔（つば）と呼ばれる鉄製刀装具が作られていた。
近年では、市内電車が、かって沢上交差点を東西南北に走り、近くに沢上電車車庫もあったことなどが、沢上交差点の心象風景となっている。
