Geocache Description:

A nice stroll along Fish Hoek beach to this cache that forms part of the Shipwreck Series. Sunrise and sunset make particularly good times. Try avoid a strong southeaster unless you would like to experience conditions similar to the day when this brig was blown ashore. For the series methodology and more info visit SS: Shipwreck Series via the related web page link.

This British brig of 215 tons was wrecked on Fish Hoek beach on 25 October 1821, whilst loading whale oil. Part of the cargo was saved at the time, and a sale was held on the beach shortly thereafter to dispose of damaged cargo, masts, rigging, and other items.

The wreck site is marked by ship's timbers and try pots. At the time of the wrecking of the Waterloo, Fish Hoek was the site of a whale oil factory.

If you wish to avoid paying for parking you should do it early morning or evening, otherwise you may wish to park at S34° 8.323' E018° 25.903' and walk across.
