The Messier Cache Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

MiTuCats: We have regretfully decided to archive this cache after it vanished in this spring's weeks of floods, winds and storms. The stump in which it was hidden was shattered (particularly the downstream side) and the cache apparently washed away by the flow of the flooded river. We were unable to find the cache container anywhere within a couple hundred feet downstream of the original hide location. Being a four tab locking container, it probably was quite buoyant despite the contents.

This is the fourth cache we've lost in this woodland (one to muggles, the others to natural action), so we've decided to try to find another spot to place caches and give up on this area. The trails into the area were impassible for a while once the floods subsided, they're still working on clearing them. As can be seen in the attached photo, they still aren't totally clear. Some other routes are worse than this one and there is still a lot of mud and standing water on some of the routes into the cache site.

Geocache Description:

It's hard to imagine a messier cache

At some seasons, the route to this cache may be messier than others. The cache is close to a popular trail so please be very stealthy. In the winter, please don't leave a straightforward track to the cache. Due to the nature of some of the items in the initial contents, we don't expect equal trades but staying with the theme (once you figure it out) would be appreciated.

Updated 7/7/14 to reflect Epoch 2000 coordinates and clarify some confusing text

The container is a camoflaged 10 x 10 x 5 inch lock-n-lock which is pretty full at the start.The terrain rating is due to distance to walk coupled with potentially wet and muddy trails at certain times. The cache is NOT at the posted coordinates.

To solve for the coordinates of this cache, you will need to determine the following before leaving home. Pay particular attention to the units. We are always happy to provide advice if needed.

Cache page images are from Hubblesite.org

AB = Orion's number

CD = Distance in mly to item 108 minus 3 mly

E = Last digit in the RA of item 48

FG = Find the item with a fairly obvious correlation to the state of Kansas and subtract 1 from its number

The latitude is N AB CD.EFG

HI = Largest value in App. size of the Lagoon minus 6'

JK = Dumbell's # + 1

L = 3rd digt in declination of the Crab Nebula

MN = Trifid's number +2

The longitude is W HI JK.LMN
